Don’t worry, your are not the only one. It is every writer’s frustration to edit their own pieces. As if it isn’t enough that you have to write a page turner. You also have to recognize cognitive biases and spelling mistakes. As much as it can be fun to edit one’s own work, it can feel tedious at times. Today, we are going to look into the concept of proofreading.

The brain doesn’t need you to actually correct a spelling mistake. It does it all by itself, and so flawlessly, that we don’t realize what is happening. I searched online, and surprisingly, it takes less than half a second for the brain to correct spelling and grammar mistakes in one’s mind. That is unfathomably quick!

Think about that next time you are proofreading a piece after having been writing for hours. At that point, you will have been staring at the same notebook, paper, or digital document for a long time. So, your brain has had plenty of time to become oblivious to mistakes. This is why it is important to develop a thorough proofreading routine.

It is can feel heartwrenching to find a mistake after having published a Substack post, submitted a written assignment at university, or sent a business e-mail. I know that feeling all to well. So, I thought I would provide advice on how you can overcome the obstacle of proofreading.
